Wet rooms and walk-in showers

A good shower can change how a bathroom works for you. I fit walk-in showers and wet rooms for homes across south Essex, from a simple bath-to-shower swap to a fully tiled, level-access room.

Swapping the bath for a walk-in shower

This is one of the jobs I'm asked about most. If your bath hardly gets used, taking it out frees up room for a big walk-in shower that's easier to step into and quicker to keep clean.

On one recent job the old bath and grey tiles came out, and in went a big walk-in shower with a black grid-frame glass screen, a black rainfall shower, marble-effect tiles from floor to ceiling and a handy built-in shelf for the shampoo bottles. The before-and-after photos below show what a difference that kind of change makes.

Wet rooms done properly

A wet room is a level-access shower where the floor itself is the shower tray. That makes it a good choice if someone in the house finds stepping over a tray or into a bath difficult, or if you just like the open look.

The important part is the bit you never see. The floor needs the right fall to the drain, and the room needs to be fully waterproofed and tanked before a single tile goes on. I take my time over that stage, because it's what keeps the water where it should be. Then it's tiled neatly, with the tiles set out properly so the lines and cuts look right.

What to think about

  • Screens and trays. A fixed glass panel, a full enclosure or an open wet-room layout each suit different rooms.
  • The shower itself. Rainfall heads, handsets or both, in chrome, black or brushed brass.
  • Storage. A tiled niche or built-in shelf keeps bottles off the floor.
  • Fittings you've chosen. If you've already bought your shower or screen, I'm happy to fit it.

I'll talk you through the options when I come and look at the room, and you'll get a clear price that says what's included.
